MOSCOW, August 21 (Itar-Tass) -- The Russian National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC) has officially confirmed that Magomed-Ali Vagabov, one of leaders of Dagestani gunmen, was killed in a special counter-terrorist operation in Dagestan's village of Gunib on Saturday.

"All the members (five people) of a group of gunmen were neutralised as a result of brief fighting. After the blaze in the building was extinguished, the group's leader Magomed-Ali Vagabov was identified among the dead bodies," a NAC spokesman told Itar-Tass.

There were no casualties among the Federal Security Service (FSB) and police units and the civil population. The investigation operation is continuing at the site, the source added.

The NAC official said that Vagabov in 2005 declared himself "emir Abdullah of Gubden". He headed the so-called Gubden terrorist group and was the second person in the "Kavkaz Imarat" and a Sharia judge appointed by terrorist underground leader Doka Umarov.

Vagabov's band was linked to many terrorist attacks committed in Dagestan and outside the republic. Vagabov organised the explosions in the Moscow metro with the participation of female terrorist bombers, victims of which were tens of people. Under Vagabov's orders, blasts were committed on railroads and local officials and policemen were shot, the source said.

Vagabov actively recruited young people to the underground ranks and organised training for female suicide terrorists. After undergoing terrorist combat training in Pakistan, he maintained direct contacts with representatives of international terrorist organisations, receiving finances from them for acts of terror.

The group of five gunmen was blocked by security service and police forces in a separately-standing building in the village of Gunib, Dagestan, on Saturday morning at seven o'clock. When they were ordered to surrender, they offered armed resistance and opened fire at the security and police units. A fire broke out in the building.

Arms and ammunition were found at the site. Identification of the bodies of Vagabov's accomplices is underway.

The operation in which bandit Vagabov and his henchmen were killed is marked success of security and law-enforcement forces and indicates that no ways, even most intricate, can help bandits evade account for their crimes, the NAC chief's adviser Andrei Przhezdomsky told Itar-Tass.

Magomedali Vagabov from the village of Gubden, Dagestan, was on the federal and international wanted lists for several years. His so-called Sharia wife Mariam Sharipova set off an explosive device at the Lubyanka underground station in Moscow on March 29. Two blasts occurred in the Moscow underground that day. Two female suicide attackers committed the acts of terror at the Lubyanka and Park Kultury stations, killing 40 people and injuring more than 90.

In April, FSB chief Alexander Bortnikov said that it was established who committed the acts of terror and who organised them, and the circle of accomplices was known. The blast at the Lubyanka station was set off by gunmen leader Vagabov's wife Mariam Sharipova, born in 1982. The suicide attacker who set off the bomb at the Park Kultury station was Dzhanet Abdurakhmanova (Abdulayeva), born in 1992, a resident of Dagestan's Khasavyurt district.
