Paula Broadwell Lover or Whistle-blower

FBI

David Petraeus

Paula Broadwell
David Petraeus

http://japanese.joins.com/article/264/163264.html?servcode=A00&sectcode=A20

http://jp.reuters.com/article/marketsNews/idJPTK823603420121113

http://japanese.ruvr.ru/2012_11_12/ciachoukan-no-aijin-kyouhakubun-aite-hanmei/

2012.11.12 10:00
http://www.sankeibiz.jp/macro/news/121112/mcb1211121001008-n1.htm

http://www.tokyo-np.co.jp/article/world/news/CK2012111002000237.html

http://www.cnn.co.jp/usa/35024284.html

---Gen. John Allen's brilliant military history and educational accomplishments dimmed by Petraeus scandal---

The head of U.S. forces in Afghanistan has become one of President Obama's favorite military men, a descendant of a family with military ties dating to the Revolutionary War. For now, the White House is standing by him as he asserts he's done nothing inappropriate with Jill Kelley, the woman who blew the whistle on Gen. David Petraeus' affair with biographer Paula Broadwell. Investigators are looking for evidence of "inappropriate communications" with Kelley.

He’s a courtly Southern gentleman whose ancestors have served in the U.S. military as far back as the Revolutionary War, a battle-tested Marine and a scholar with three master’s degrees who can quote Shakespeare and sleeps just four hours a night.

Gen. John Allen is also one of President Obama’s favorite military men.

“John Allen is my man,” Obama said after a White House meeting earlier this year.

Now the 58-year-old warrior is ensnared in the four-star scandal that has already felled CIA chief David Petraeus - the man Allen replaced in July 2011 as head of the U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

Investigators looking for evidence of “inappropriate communications” are poring over the thousands of emails - some of them reportedly flirty - that Allen allegedly sent to Jill Kelley, the Tampa temptress who blew with whistle on Petraeus’ affair with his bodacious biographer Paula Broadwell.

So far the White House is sticking by Allen, who denies any wrongdoing and insists he’s never been alone with sexy socialite Kelley. But the scandal has derailed - for now - Allen’s nomination to become the next commander of U.S. European Command and the commander of NATO forces in Europe.

Allen, whose wife, Katherine, is also from a military family, is lying low and has not said anything publicly about the scandal scorching his good name.

Born in Virginia, Allen is the son of a Navy lieutenant commander who witnessed Japan’s surrender during World War II and the grandson of a combat engineer who was gassed during World War I.

Allen graduated from the Naval Academy in 1976 and then joined the Marines as an infantry officer.

Along the way, he earned master's degrees from Georgetown University, the National Defense Intelligence College and the National War College.

Allen got the attention of the White House while serving in Iraq.

Assigned to the rebellious Anbar Province, Allen led the drive to convince the Sunni tribal sheiks to turn against the Al Qaeda militants who infiltrated Iraq after Saddam Hussein fell.

That helped turn the tide in Iraq, and Allen was promoted to deputy commander of the U.S. Central Command, where his new focus became Iran.

In that job, Allen got plenty of face time with Obama. And when the President named Petraeus to head the CIA, Allen was dispatched to Kabul to wind down America's longest war.

That job placed Allen in Tampa, where he became friendly with Kelley, a married Petraeus pal who organized events for the troops at MacDill Air Force Base.

They became so close that when Kelley’s twin sister, Natalie, needed character witnesses during a bitter child custody battle, both Petraeus and Allen wrote glowing letters on her behalf to the court.

"She is a dedicated mother, whose only focus is to provide the necessary support, love, and care for her son," Allen wrote.

Jill Kelley, 37, of Tampa, Fla., reportedly alerted the FBI several months ago about threatening emails she had received from Petraeus alleged mistress, biographer Paula Broadwell, a senior military official told the Associated Press.

The mystery woman who blew the lid off former CIA Director David Petraeus’ career-ending affair is also tied to the military - a sexy social liaison for an Air Force base in Tampa who says she and the ex-general are just “friends.”

Jill Kelley, 37, a married mother of three from the Gulf Coast city, alerted the FBI several months ago after receiving emails from Petraeus’ alleged mistress, biographer Paula Broadwell, warning the stunning Tampa socialite to “stay away from” the spymaster, according to sources with knowledge of the messages.

The raven-haired Kelley, who has an unpaid position as a social planner for MacDill Air Force Base, insisted in a statement Sunday her relationship with the retired four-star general and ex-CIA director was platonic, dating to when Petraeus ran the U.S. Central Command from the base.

“We and our family have been friends with Gen. Petraeus and his family for over five years,” Kelley said. “We respect his family’s privacy and want the same for us and our three children.”

But Broadwell’s father said Sunday his daughter is the victim of character assassination and implied the bombshell story is just a smoke screen for something bigger.

“This is about something else entirely, and the truth will come out,” Broadwell’s dad, Paul Krantz, told the Daily News outside his home in Bismarck, N.D.

“There is a lot more that is going to come out,” said Krantz, claiming he was not allowed to elaborate. “You wait and see. There’s a lot more here than meets the eye.”

He said he supports his daughter “100%.”

“I stand by my daughter. She is an exceptional person,” Krantz told The News, adding that Broadwell, a West Point grad, and her family were “doing well, considering.”

Kelley has not spoken publicly about the scandal. She and her husband, Dr. Scott Kelley, were busy Sunday entertaining guests at a birthday party for one of their daughters at their colonial-style mansion overlooking Tampa’s Hillsborough Bay.

In an exclusive photo obtained by The News, the Kelleys appeared worried while speaking with Vice Adm. Robert Harward, deputy commander of the Central Command, who showed up at the party in his white dress uniform.

Jill Kelley was raised in Philadelphia, where her family settled in the mid-1970s and opened a Middle Eastern restaurant after immigrating from Lebanon. Her father, John Khawam, was a renowned organist in Lebanon.

A close friend of Petraeus told ABC News that Kelley saw the general often, but their relationship was innocent.

“It is very clear there was nothing going on other than friendship between Kelley and Petraeus,” the friend said.

In 2010, Kelley and her husband, a surgeon at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, invited Petraeus and his wife of 38 years, Holly, to be their guests at a party for the Gasparilla parade, an annual pirate-themed festival in Tampa. At the time, Petraeus ran the Central Command from MacDill.

Kelley’s 7-year-old  daughter,  Caroline, even posted a family photo album online that she dedicated to her parents and included family photos - one of her and her sisters posing with Petraeus.

“I was with Gen. Petraeus. He came to my house,” Caroline wrote.

Broadwell’s extended family members were completely caught off guard by the news of Petraeus’ shocking resignation, which broke Friday.

“They didn’t find out about the affair until they saw it on the news Friday night,” the grandmother of Broadwell’s husband, Scott, told The News. “Everyone’s reaction was shock. We were all shell-shocked.”

The grandmother, who would only give her first name, Sylvia, described Paula Broadwell as “intelligent and really smart.”

“She’s too smart for that,” said Sylvia, adding that her grandson is “a wonderful father to those two young kids.”

She said Scott Broadwell’s parents in Sanibel, Fla., “felt like the rug was pulled out from under them.”

“It’s a sad situation,” the grandmother said.

Petraeus began seeing Paula Broadwell, a writer with a military background, on the side in 2011, several months after he retired from the military, but ended the romance about four months ago, sources told ABC News.

BuzzFeed, citing sources, said he took her on a government-funded trip to Paris in July 2011.

Russell Broadwell, Scott’s father, confirmed to The News that he, too, was astonished by the news he first heard on TV Friday.

Asked if he has spoken to his son, Broadwell said, “Of course, he’s my son.” He refused to further comment.

Paula Broadwell, 40 (above), wrote the biography “All In: The Education of General David Petraeus.” She has yet to publicly comment on the scandal that has rocked Washington and the U.S. security community.

A source told The Wall Street Journal that Broadwell, who lives in North Carolina, became jealous when she suspected Kelley was in a romantic relationship with Petraeus.

Kelley’s twin sister, Natalie Khawam, is a lawyer who represents whistleblowers, but there was no indication Sunday that she was representing her sister.

The FBI probe into the menacing emails uncovered other exchanges between Broadwell and Petraeus’ personal email account that made clear their relationship had gone beyond professional limits, including one that talked about “sex under a desk.”

The scandal is spreading beyond the participants into the political arena. Several top lawmakers are demanding more information about what the FBI, the CIA and President Obama knew - and when they knew it.

Obama accepted the 60-year-old Petraeus’ resignation Friday, a mere three days after his reelection.

Rep. Dave Reichert (R-Wash.) confirmed Sunday he first learned of the affair several months ago from a friend who knows Kelley. Reichert told House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who put Kelley in touch with FBI Director Robert Mueller.

Cantor’s staff didn’t immediately tell the House Intelligence Committee or other House leaders because they didn’t know whether the information was credible, Fox News reported.

Retired U.S. Army Col. Steve Boylan, Petraeus’ former spokesman, said the general is kicking himself for his atrocious lack of judgment.

“He hugely regrets what happened,” Boylan told ABC News. “He pretty much threw away the best job he ever had and put his family through something just too hard to describe.”

DENVER - The woman whose extramarital affair with CIA director David Patraeus led to his resignation last week recently gave a speech at the University of Denver that provided insight into the early stages of their relationship.

Paula Broadwell earned a master's degree from the University of Denver in 2006 and spoke about the attack in Benghazi at an Oct. 26 alumni event. It was during that speech, now available on YouTube, that Broadwell made the controversial comments.

"I don't know if a lot of you heard this, but the CIA annex had actually taken a couple Libyan militia members prisoner and they think the attack on the consulate was an effort to try and get these prisoners back. That's still being vetted," she said.

An ambassador and two other Americans were killed in that attack, but the CIA is denying her assertion that it held Libyan militants prior to the attack.

Broadwell earned a master's degree in international security from DU in 2006, before attending Harvard where she first met General Petraeus.

Broadwell, a co-author of Patraeus' biography, also spoke about the general in her speech.

"I realized there was an opportunity to write about this transformational leader," she said. "So I proposed writing a dissertation using him as a case study.

Broadwell said many of her earlier interviews with Petraeus were conducted through email and while running together.

"I was told never to beat him, keep up with him and that's the rite of passage but don't beat him because he's a guy, you are a girl, he's a celebrity and you are a soccer mom," she said.

Broadwell was also an embedded journalist in Afghanistan when Petraeus became the top commander there.

"He was gracious enough to allow me to travel with him," she said.

---Who is Jill Kelley?---

Jill Kelley, the attractive, young socialite who alerted the FBI to threatening emails from David Petraeus' apparent mistress, is well-known on the Tampa social scene.

"Outgoing!" said Aaron Fodiman, owner of Tampa Bay Magazine. "If you looked it up in Webster's, there would be a picture of her."

Kelley, 37, and her husband, Dr. Scott Kelley, a surgeon at Moffitt Cancer Center, have been featured in Tampa Bay Magazine at least three times, attending charity galas where the guest list also included high-ranking officers from MacDill Air Force Base.

Fodiman, who attends countless society events to take pictures, says it's not unusual that Kelley and her husband are friends with Petraeus. He says South Tampa social circles often include brass from MacDill and "movers and shakers" from the community.

One photograph that has surfaced shows Petraeus at the Kelleys' Bayshore Boulevard home at a Gasparilla party two years ago.

Fodiman says his relationship with the Kelleys went beyond photography for his magazine. He says they are friends. He says he hasn't spoken with them since the story broke, but just about everyone is talking about them.

"I can only say that if Jill made a complaint to the FBI, you can be sure that somebody went over the line with her."

A close associate of Petraeus told the Associated Press that he considers Kelley a family friend and not a romantic interest.

---David Petraeus ordered lover Paula Broadwell to stop emailing Jill Kelley---

David Petraeus reportedly tried to rein in his mistress after federal agents discovered that she had sent a string of harassing emails to a Florida socialite.

Paula Broadwell, the former CIA director’s biographer and lover, allegedly sent threatening messages to Jill Kelley, a 37-year-old “social liaison” for the US military in Tampa, triggering the FBI investigation which led to Gen Petraeus’s downfall.

When Mrs Kelley, a family friend of the Petraeuses, learned from the FBI that the anonymous messages were coming from Mrs Broadwell she turned to the former general for help. Gen Petraeus then urged Mrs Broadwell to stop, according to the Washington Post.

Mrs Kelley reportedly went to the FBI in early summer after she began receiving the emails. The relationship between the general and his biographer is believed to have ended in July.

On Sunday Mrs Kelley, who insists that the former CIA director is just a close friend who is like a grandfather to her children, was identified as the woman Mrs Broadwell believed was her rival.

Mrs Kelley was silent yesterday after hiring Monica Lewinsky's former crisis manager.

After stating that she and her husband, Scott, a surgeon, "have been friends with Mr Petraeus and his family for over five years", Mrs Kelley requested privacy and briefly fled their $1.2 million (L756,000) mansion after being besieged by media during a birthday party for one of her daughters.

Neighbours and friends yesterday supported the mother-of-three's strenuous denials that she had engaged in anything other than friendship with the 60-year-old retired general. "She would say he was kind of like a grandpa to her girls," said one, who asked not to be named.

Mrs Kelley, whose role as "social liaison" is unpaid, was a frequent guest at Central Command functions. After being presented at one event with a certificate naming her an "honorary ambassador" for allied nations, she began using the title minus the "honorary", according to The Associated Press.

She and her husband hosted Mr Petraeus at a party on their lawn for Tampa's annual Gasparilla parade in 2010. He arrived with a 28-car motorcade. Other guests included Pam Bondi, Florida's Attorney General and a close ally of Mitt Romney, the former presidential candidate.

Mrs Kelley is believed to have sparked the inquiry after receiving messages from anonymous email accounts that reportedly warned her to "back off" and to "stay away from my guy".

She has hired Abbe Lowell, a formidable white-collar attorney who defended John Edwards, the former US presidential candidate, against corruption charges that were dropped earlier this year.
Mrs Kelley also recruited Judy Smith, a Washington-based crisis manager and former spokesman for George W. Bush, who represented Ms Lewinsky after her affair with Bill Clinton. Neither Mr Lowell nor Ms Smith returned requests for comment.

Mrs Kelley, who has an identical twin sister, comes from a Lebanese family that moved to Philadelphia in the 1970s. Her parents are believed to have run a restaurant and a vehicle registration company in nearby New Jersey.

Her alleged harasser, Mrs Broadwell, has come under intense scrutiny since Gen. Petraeus submitted his resignation on Friday. The former military officer and fitness fanatic, whose husband is also a senior medic called Scott, has not been seen since news of the scandal broke.

Details of her apparent relationship continued to emerge yesterday, however, with reports that Gen Petraeus took her with him on a government-funded trip to Paris in July last year. The US defence department did not comment.

Mrs Broadwell has reportedly hired Robert Muse, a prominent Washington criminal attorney who dealt with the fallout of the Watergate scandal, to represent her.

No one was at the Broadwell's family home in an upmarket area of Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday. A spokesman for Charlotte Radiology Breast Centre, where Dr Broadwell works as a radiologist, refused to comment on his whereabouts. He "was not seeing patients today," she said.

---Paula Broadwell claims about Benghazi attack dismissed as 'baseless' by CIA---

Woman who had affair with David Petraeus gave speech about the CIA chief's handling of the Libya assault last month

The CIA has dismissed as "baseless" and "uninformed" claims made by the former lover of ex-agency chief David Petraeus that Libyan militants were held in secret US prisons prior to the deadly Benghazi consulate attack.

Paula Broadwell, the biographer whose affair with Petraeus led to his abrupt resignation Friday, alleged that the assault, in which US ambassador Christopher Stevens was killed, was an attempt to free men being detained in a covert CIA annex.

Speaking last month at the University of Denver, Broadwell further alleged that Petreaus knew about the secret holding cells.

President Barack Obama stripped the CIA of its power to take prisoners through an executive order signed soon after his inauguration in January 2009.

It put an end to the controversial network of secret jails that operated under the administration of President George W Bush.

The 11 September attack on the US consulate in Benghazi resulted in the deaths of four Americans. The assault - and what the White House was told about the need for additional security prior to the attack - has since been the subject of political debate in Washington.

Congressional bodies are due to hold hearings about the incident on Thursday. Petraeus had been expected to give evidence but his resignation has seemingly robbed lawmakers of the chance to grill him over what he knew, and what he passed on to senior administration figures prior to the attack

Broadwell's allegations over the motive of militants in attacking the consulate are likely to fuel speculation over the timing of Petraeus's resignation.

In an answer to a question reading the CIA chief's handling of the incident, the biographer said: "Now, I don't know if a lot of you heard this, but the CIA annex had actually, um, had taken a couple of Libyan militia members prisoner and they think that the attack on the consulate was an effort to try to get these prisoners back. So that's still being vetted."

She added: "The challenging thing for General Petraeus is that in his new position, he's not allowed to communicate with the press. So he's known all of this - they had correspondence with the CIA station chief in, in Libya. Within 24 hours they kind of knew what was happening."

The comments were recorded and posted in a YouTube clip which has since been taken down.

On Monday, the CIA was quick to shoot down Broadwell's claims.

"Any suggestion that the agency is still in the detention business is uninformed and baseless," agency spokesman Preston Golson said.

---Timeline of the Petraeus affair---

Washington (CNN) -- The career-ending affair that led to the resignation of CIA Director David Petraeus had its roots in a multi-year friendship, a flattering book and a young writer who was taken with the four star-general's leadership style.

The affair came to light during an FBI investigation of a complaint that author Paula Broadwell, 40, was allegedly sending harassing e-mails to another woman close to Petraeus, a U.S. official said. Here's a look at an anatomy of an affair:

Spring 2006
Broadwell met Gen. David Petraeus when he spoke at Harvard, where she was a graduate student, according to the preface she co-authored the book "All In: The Education of General David Petraeus." She told the general about her research interests and he agreed to put her in touch with people studying the same issues. "I later discovered that he was famous for this type of mentoring and networking, especially with aspiring soldier-scholars," Broadwell wrote.

2008
Broadwell began her Ph.D. dissertation on Petraeus and his innovative leadership skills. Some interviews were done via e-mail. Others were conducted on occasional jogs with him, including one run Broadwell took with Petraeus and his team along the Potomac River in Washington.

2009
Broadwell moved with her husband, Scott, to Charlotte, North Carolina, according to the Charlotte Observer.

June 2010
Petraeus was tapped to replace Gen. Stanley McChrystal as the top commander in Afghanistan. Broadwell decided to turn her research into a book and follow Petraeus to that country. "We had a relationship before I went there as far as this dissertation was concerned, so it just took it to another level," Broadwell told CNN's Brooke Baldwin in February.

August 31, 2011
Petraeus retires from the U.S. Army, leaves Afghanistan.

September 6, 2011
Petraeus sworn in as CIA director and returns to the Washington area.

October/November 2011
Petraeus and Broadwell began their affair about two months after he took over at the CIA, according to a Petraeus friend.

May 2012
E-mails began appearing in Patraeus family friend Jill Kelley's inbox-emails she says were harassment. The Petraeus affair first came to light when an FBI investigation looked into a complaint that Broadwell was sending harassing e-mails to Kelley, 37, a U.S. official said.

Summer 2012
Broadwell and Petraeus end their affair about four months ago, a decision reached mutually, and the two last talked about a month ago, Petraeus' friend said.

September 11, 2012
U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in a terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi. The subsequent fallout fueled Republican criticism of the Obama administration's foreign policy. The administration pointed to incomplete intelligence reports for early statements that the attack grew from a demonstration over an anti-Muslim movie.

September/October 2012
Broadwell was interviewed twice by FBI investigators. They also gained access to her computer and discovered emails that turned out to be from Petraeus. Petreaus was also interviewed once during that same time frame, a U.S. official said.

October 2012
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor was made aware of an extramarital affair involving Petraeus, Doug Heye, a spokesman for the congressman, told CNN. Heye said Cantor, a Republican, was tipped to the information by an FBI employee. The congressman had a conversation with the official, described as a whistle-blower, about the affair and potential national security concerns involved in the matter, he said.

November 6, 2012
America re-elects President Barack Obama. The same day, Petraeus told Director of National Intelligence James Clapper about the affair, according to a senior U.S. intelligence official. Clapper then advised Petraeus to resign, the official said.

November 9, 2012
Petraeus, 60, steps down, admitting to an affair. The House and Senate intelligence committees were informed of the FBI investigation the same day, prompting outrage from House and Senate members. Petraeus' resignation came just days before he was scheduled to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee about the Benghazi attack.
